The Pass Line
Craps is a dice game in which the players make wagers on the outcome of the roll, or a series of rolls, of a pair of dice. Players may wager money against each other playing "street craps" or a bank playing " casino craps", also known as "table craps", or often just "craps". Because it requires little equipment, "street craps" can be played in informal settings. Craps developed in the United States from a simplification of the western European game of Hazard. The origins of Hazard are obscure and may date to the Crusades.
Hazard was brought from London to New Orleans about by the returning Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville , the young gambler and scion of a family of wealthy colonial Louisiana landowners. Both Hazard and its new offshoot were unfamiliar and rejected by Americans of his social class, leading de Marigny to introduce his novelty to the local underclass.
Fieldhands taught their friends, and deckhands carried the new game up the Mississippi River. Celebrating the popular success of his novelty, de Marigny gave the name Craps to a street in his New Orleans real estate development.
The central game, called Pass from the French word for pace or step, has been gradually supplemented over the decades by many companion games which can be played simultaneously. The entire collection of over one hundred separate and independent possible games is called Craps. The name Craps was a Louisiana mispronunciation of the word "crabs", which in London had been the joint epithet for the numbers two and three, which in Hazard are the only permanent instant losing numbers for wagers on Pass.

Hi I am from Perth Australia and we do not have a craps table at our casino. So might be a dumb question but in the Don't Pass Bar is better odds why doesn't everyone bet it instead of the Pass bar?? I know it is known as the dark side but if everyone bets it then the whole table can still be winning or losing together but with better odds??
Personally I play the pass since You need a larger bankroll on the don't to cover the odds. While you get true odds no house edge this lager bet scares people off. First, most craps players don't care about better odds.
Feb 20, Threads: February 20th, at 6: May 5, Threads: Nov 2, Threads: First off, the difference in the house edge is minor, so tradition plays a big part in it. Part of it comes from the way the game is introduced to newbies. If you attend one of the casino's free craps lessons, they will start with the basics: Then they'll talk about how a come bet with odds is just like a pass bet, but after the point is established.
Then they'll talk about the place bets, and finally the field and hard ways, because they're popular and simple. They'll mention the Dont's as well as the prop bets, but they'll do it in a way that suggests that they are advanced concepts, and a newbie should get familiar with the basics first.
The other part comes from the fact that a wrong side shooter will retain the dice when he loses. So the tradition is to be a right side shooter. And players generally will bet WITH the shooter. Or at least with the dice, which means right side betting. I think the fact that dark side is also called 'wrong' actually has very little to do with it. For what it's worth, a few months ago, there was a discussion here about creating a craps game that favored wrong betting.
I've been to Vegas a few times, going again in 10 days! Usually play blackjack, but decided I want to give Craps a try this time. I've read up on it a little bit, and played some online. By now, I think I'm fairly comfortable with the rules and best strategies.
I do have one question though After the point is rolled, say I want to make a side bet on the Hard 8.
I know its kind of a "sucker bet", but lets assume that I'm winning big and feel like luck is on my side. Also, any other "table etiquette" pointers would be appreciated.
How do you get his attention? Where do you place the chips when you tell him what bet you want to play? Those bets in the middle of the table, like the hard 8, have no minimum well, a one dollar minimum.
You may place such a bet even if you have no other bet on the table. I guess the odds on those are so much in their favor, that they don't mind bending the rules on those a little bit. You can play the pass line, pass line odds, field, and come bets yourself. Place bets, come odds, and hard ways, and other proposition bets are put on by the dealer. If the table is busy, hold your chips on the table and he will acknowledge you when its your turn to bet.
